Filezilla the Free FTP and SFTP Program for Windows
When you start running a site, the control panel for your sites hosting more often than not has the option to manage your files, allowing you to edit, delete, upload and download from a web page. This is great for simple sites but as soon as you start getting into more complicated sites sometimes Fantastico and say the cPanel file manager just don’t cut it.
Enter the world of FTP programs, or programs that allow you to use File Transfer Protocol, there are plenty of solutions out there for this, such as Cute FTP which was the first paid FTP program I used (and which for me had a lousy habit of freezing badly), then I switched to Smart FTP which I liked a lot and was free for a really long time, by the time the free license was up I figured I’d pay to renew that instead of Cute, however, then I found Filezilla which is not only totally free but beats the other two hands down, functionally speaking of course.
Well, it’s not as pretty as Smart FTP but it runs super fast, supports SFTP and Resume and I can’t say having run many sites over the years that Filezilla is missing anything other paid FTP programs offer that it doesn’t and being free you won’t be paying for upgrades either.
It has the mucho needed ability to store your FTP details of sites you log into regularly and even allows for access to Anonymous FTP Sites and you can configure how many workers upload and download files at the same time as well as allowing you to CHMOD any files or directories you may need to.
Overall it is an outstanding piece of kit and on par with industry leading paid software, so unless you need an FTP program with a feature that Filezilla does not yet provide then that would be my only reason for recommending something else but I have yet to find a program that matches Filezilla, paid or not.
